Next week the Miami Grand Prix will be held for the first time, next year the third American stage will appear on the calendar – in Las Vegas. Formula 1 really needs a driver from the United States so that the Americans have someone to cheer for – and McLaren has such a driver.
Last year, Colton Herta, who drives IndyCar for Andretti Autosport, was named as part of a deal to buy the Sauber team where he could drive. The deal fell through and in March of this year, Herta signed a contract with McLaren to work on tests behind the wheel of last year’s car, allowing the team to assess the driver’s abilities, and Colton to prepare on a possible debut.
Well-informed British journalist Joe Savard writes that McLaren is considering Herta’s candidacy as a replacement for Daniel Ricciardo, and that this could happen in 2024 or even earlier. So far, no paperwork has been signed that Herta’s speed and apparent commercial potential would make such a move very likely.
