Fernando Alonso has completed his Mediterranean voyage aboard his impressive new yacht and is back on the track – not yet in Formula 1, but this weekend in the MotoGP Championship at Austria’s Red Bull Ring.
The two-time world champion and his girlfriend are there as guests of the Italian Aprilia team. Andrea Schlager, by the way, is an Austrian TV journalist with experience as a reporter on the MotoGP stages.
Alonso went to Spielberg not just because he was interested in motor racing: the sports department of the Italian company Aprilia is now led by Massimo Rivola, who served as Ferrari’s sports director when Fernando was a driver of the Scuderia.
Since then they have had excellent friendships. Apparently this explains, among other things, that the Spaniard appeared in the MotoGP paddock in an Aprilia T-shirt, but with the number 14, under which he traditionally performs in Formula 1.
In addition, a few months ago at his karting track in Asturias, Alonso organized a race in which, together with him and Esteban Okon, his Alpine team-mate, Rivola and Maverick Viñales, the Spanish motorcyclist of the Aprilia team, now placed 9th in the personal championship score.
The MotoGP press team even shared a short video on social media, filmed in Aprilia’s garage, in which Fernando talks to the team and gets a closer look at the mighty race bikes.
The two-time world champion was not the only representative of the motorsport world in the MotoGP paddock: Gerhard Berger, who once played for the Ferrari team, and now one of the leaders of the DTM touring car series, was also on display.
