Pedro de la Rosa, former Formula 1 driver and now commentator on Spanish television channel DAZN F1, believes Max Verstappen could become the best driver in the history of the world championship in the future.
After 13 stages of the season, the Dutchman and his team lead by a large margin in both league standings – it is very likely that Max will win a second title in a row. His closest rival, Charles Leclerc, is already 80 points behind him and as Ferrari – unlike Red Bull Racing – is quite unstable it will be very difficult to regain such a gap.
During an interview with RacingNews365, the Spaniard was asked who in his opinion is more powerful as a driver, Verstappen or Leclerc, and de la Rosa replied without much thought: “I think they are quite similar in terms of speed, both are very fast, especially in the same round. , but more importantly, both are very smart riders.
The main difference is that Max controls the course of the race much better, makes almost no mistakes and I don’t talk about crashes or crashes at all.
Whatever the track conditions, Max is in control. It doesn’t matter if it’s training or a race, it’s raining or the asphalt is dry. In the past, Max tried to approach the limit during practice, and then he periodically made mistakes, flew off the track or crashed cars.
But when was the last time you saw him lock the wheels under braking? He has everything under control so well that he rarely leaves a bald spot on one of the tires.
It’s a real pleasure to see him on the track. He is smart, aggressive and fast – Max has all these qualities at once. I think he has everything to become one of the best drivers in Formula 1 history. I have no doubts about that.
Only in time will we know which teams he will play for in the next 10 years and how competitive they will be. But Max has everything to become the best.
I think he is by far the best. But let’s not forget Lewis Hamilton, Fernando Alonso and Charles Leclerc, and I also have a lot of respect for drivers like Lando Norris, George Russell and Carlos Sainz. They are all top professionals. But if I had to choose a rider who is currently riding at the highest level, I would choose Max.
