Named Candidates for the Miami Race Director Role

It was announced on Thursday that both FIA race directors Nils Wittich and Eduardo Freitas had tested positive for Covid-19. This could be a major problem for Formula 1 if we have to look for an interim race director for the Miami Grand Prix, which will be held from May 6-8.

Eduardo Freitas had no intention of making it to the next round anyway, as he has to work out a race weekend in Belgium for the WEC round in Spa. Niels Wittich has a week to pass a Covid-19 negative test, which is required to enter the United States, and fly to Miami next Friday.

The FIA makes no statements about race director health information. The federation spokesperson said that “medical information about our employees will only be made public if it is relevant to the conduct of the competition.”

British Sky Sports News lists several candidates who could replace Wittich on the podium in Miami. Former race director Michael Masi is now in Australia and is unlikely to return to his former role. The candidacy of Formula 1 sports director Steve Nielsen is also not currently being considered.

Herbie Blasch, who was Charlie Whiting’s deputy for many years, is much more likely to become interim race director. Another contender is Colin Haywood, who was originally going to replace Freitas in Miami. Another candidate is DTM race director Scott Elkins.
