The night before, on the last day of the traditional and highly prestigious RM-Sotheby’s auction in Monterey (California, USA), the Ferrari F300, the car Michael Schumacher drove in Formula 1 in 1998, went up for auction.
Built at Maranello under the direction of famed designer Rory Burn, this chassis, serial number 187, was used in four races that season and Schumacher won all four – the Canadian, French, British and Italian Grands Prix.
The car aroused great interest among collectors of historic race cars and as a result the lot sold for $6.220,000. The amount is impressive, but it did not set a record: last year an anonymous buyer for another Ferrari of Michael Schumacher – F2001 – deposited $7,504,000. It is she who takes first place in the list of the most expensive modern Formula 1 cars ever sold at auction.
But in the “absolute ranking” and this, of course, is not the most valuable specimen. Yesterday’s auction set a price of $22.005,000 – this was the final amount allocated for the unique 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport Spider sports prototype.
There were only two such cars with a 4.9-litre V12 engine, and at that time legendary motorsport heroes like Juan Manuel Fangio, Caroll Shelby, Phil Hill, Eugenio Castellotti, Masten Gregory, Richie Ginter and others drove them in various competitions. . .
An interesting detail: On the car’s original fuel tank, Carroll Shelby wrote this inscription: “Mr. Ferrari told me this was the best Ferrari he ever built.”
