Ecclestone denies £400m fraud allegations in court

Former Formula 1 boss Bernie Eclestone at Westminster Magistrates’ Court in London has denied allegations of fraud worth £400 million (about 472 million euros), reports the Independent.

The charge against the 91-year-old civil servant was cleared by the Crown Prosecution Service (CPS) following an investigation by the Revenue and Customs Service (HMRC). He was accused of providing false information about his overseas assets.

– During the investigation, Ecclestone was asked about offshore trusts with which he was associated. The charge is based on his failure to declare a trust in Singapore with a bank account containing around $650 million, prosecutor Robert Simpson told the court.

The hearing lasted around five minutes, with Ecclestone being released on bail and due to appear at Southwark Crown Court on September 19.

Ecclestone left Formula 1 helm in 2017 and has been in charge of the series for around 40 years.
