David Coulthard: Leclerc is too far behind

Former Formula 1 driver David Coulthard is confident Ferrari will put up a fight for Red Bull Racing for race wins in the second half of the season. However, the eminent Scot doubts the Scuderia drivers will stop Max Verstappen from claiming his second career title.

David Coulthard: “I think Ferrari has managed to make a very fast car this year, and they are two fast racers. It was clear that Charles Leclerc was able to squeeze the most out of his technique in qualifying in the first half of the season, but gradually Carlos Sainz returned and showed a high pace in the last few races before the break. I think Ferrari will be a real contender for Red Bull in the second half of the season for the race win.

As for the battle for the title, Charles Leclerc’s backlog in the individual competition is too big to stand a chance, but we’ll see. Of course Ferrari had reliability problems in the first half of the season and made strategic mistakes. After the break, however, Red Bull will have to serve penalties for replacing engines, but they will do it on tracks that are easier to overtake. The circuit in Hungary was not included.

Formula 1 continues to surprise and if you evaluate the first half of the season, it turned out to be one of the most spectacular of recent years, also due to the accidents associated with the show. We’ve seen great battles for poles and wins and we have nine laps to go before the end of the season.”

On Mercedes’ chances of taking their first win of the season, Coulthard said: “It will be interesting to see how far they can fall behind the leaders at Spa. I say ‘give in’ because the track with long straights stretches and fast corners may not suit their car.

If they close the gap at Spa then it’s safe to say Mercedes will be able to fight for a podium finish in every race. However, I do not know what novelties they are preparing for the Spa.

Judging by the first half of the season, their car is too slow on the straights to perform well in Spa. But you never know what it will be like in practice. Rain and cold weather can affect the course of the weekend. After all, we are talking about the race in Belgium.”
