The winner and prizewinners of the Belgian Grand Prix take very original trophies – this is literally part of the legendary circuit in Spa.
The race organizers have done their best: everyone who will be on the podium this weekend will receive a special kind of awards, made from oaks that grew in the surrounding forests, but were cut down during the recent reconstruction of the circuit. As you can see in the photo, the elegant wooden frame reproduces the configuration of a classic Belgian ring.
But that’s not all: the cavities in the glass part of the cups, created by the craftsmen of the local company Gérondal, are filled with water from the Red Water River, which flows under the track and gave the name to the famous bend, and at the bottom of these handmade creations are bits of old asphalt from the Radillon bend.
Basically, the reconstruction of the route was carried out exactly in the area of the Eau Rouge and Radillon bends – first of all, the departure zones were expanded, which also required the relocation of protective fences. A covered stand for 4600 seats with a sector for VIP guests was built on the site of the once famous chalet at Radillon.
I would like to believe that the race after which these trophies will be played will not be the last in the history of this circuit.
