Formula 1 boss Stefano Domenicali would like to seriously change the set-up of the race weekend. During a meeting with the press, he said he expects to reduce the number of training sessions by increasing the number of sessions for which riders receive points and other prizes.
Stefano Domenicali: “I think the fans want to see a real fight for the result every day during the weekend. Free rides are interesting for engineers and racers, but in sports you have to fight for something.
The calendar already has restrictions on training outside of the race weekend. I plan to be aggressive and want everything to be limited to a single Friday morning practice, and in all other sessions to play something.
When there is some action on the track, people are interested to know how it will turn out. This is my position, my contribution to the discussion on future regulation. Every time the cars take to the track, with regard to Sunday’s race, which will remain the most important part of the weekend, the drivers have to fight for points or prizes. That’s my opinion.
Now we are working to have six stages next year with a sprint on Saturday, together with the FIA we are working on the details. In particular, we are talking about a possible change in the sprint format.
I want to discuss all these ideas with the drivers, the teams and the FIA because I think they will add intensity to what is happening on the track.”
Domenicali will present her proposals at a meeting of the Formula 1 committee, which has the right to approve changes to the regulations for the 2023 season and send them to the World Motor Sport Council for approval.
