Race in Spa may remain on the championship calendar

The contract of the autodrome in Spa to host the World Cup expires this year, but there is still hope that the Belgian Grand Prix will remain on the calendar.

Formula 1 President and CEO Stefano Domenicali said negotiations on the future of the classic race will continue this weekend.

“Indeed, we continue to work with other promoters and have discussions with them to understand their readiness to host races this year and next,” Domenicali said. “But we have always emphasized that it is important to maintain a balance so that at least a third of all races take place in Europe, a third in the Asian region and another third in the Americas and the Middle East.

Of course we are talking about business projects with a serious financial component, and that is very important. But we’ve always said that we also respect traditional breeds, whose organizers we know can’t bring in as much money as others. This respectful attitude will be continued in the future.

You can remember that there were periods when Belgium was not on the calendar, but then this Grand Prix returned. There is no doubt that this is a great job and that is why we will continue to negotiate. And I never said that the race at Spa will be the last time this year. I can confirm that Belgian promoters will often be seen in my office at the track this weekend in Spa.”

It’s worth noting that Formula 1 recently conducted a survey of fans to find out their attitudes towards certain races, and over 80% of entrants want the Belgian Grand Prix to remain on the championship calendar.
