Aston Martin is looking to improve the efficiency of the AMR22 chassis and, according to team leader Mike Krak, work is progressing in three main areas.
Sebastian Vettel and Lance Stroll’s cars suffer from destabilization at high speeds more than others, so to compensate for the longitudinal build-up, the team must increase the car’s ground clearance, leading to a loss of downforce.
“There are three main points we are working on. The most important is aerodynamics, – quotes the words of the Krak edition of The Race. – The second point is the weight of the car, which is also very important. And thirdly, it is necessary to ensure that we respond better to the wishes of our riders. We work with the suspension, with the steering, with all the settings of the machine as a whole.
We need to make our drivers more comfortable behind the wheel, so they have a better feel for the car – then they can get more out of it.
I think this is also why we have had so many incidents on different tracks, for example in Melbourne, where our drivers lost control of the cars more than once. You can’t call this normal, because riders of this level can’t always fly off the track.
I think we have already taken a small step forward in Imola by bringing some small novelties to that race, but now we are preparing the next one. The team wants to make updates at every stage, we will not stop upgrading the car and I think in a few races we will be able to improve our form.”
The team is believed to be working on a new version of the bottom, although there are also rumors that Aston Martin will recreate the AMR22’s side pontoons. But speaking of the team’s plans, Krak chose not to specify them and not mention specific dates.
“It would be foolish to name here or any other specific race. After all, even if you take some new elements with you, they should always be checked. You have to understand how well you handled the case, he emphasized. “Suppose we bring a lot of upgrades to Miami and it rains or something happens and we can’t make them work effectively.
When you promise something, it creates high expectations, and then everyone can decide you didn’t deliver. Think of a weekend in Imola. His program included sprints and on Friday we only had one practice. If we brought serious innovations, we wouldn’t have a chance to test them, evaluate whether they work or not.
That’s why I think it’s important not to name a specific breed, especially not to announce it publicly. I want to say we have a plan, but I don’t want to go into details. However, I think we should do better in a few races.”
