During the summer break, Williams announced a contract extension with Alex Albon. In Belgium, the young rider announced that he would no longer be formally affiliated with Red Bull from next year, although the Austrian drinks manufacturer’s logos could remain on his helmet – negotiations are underway.
Alex Albon: “From next year I will only be a Williams driver. Of course I will keep the ties with Red Bull simply because they helped me a lot at the beginning of my career. I have a good relationship with them, but let’s just say I’ll be on my own next year.”
Answering a clarifying question as to whether his words mean he is no longer a Red Bull driver, on loan to Williams, Alex said: “Exactly. I’m a Williams racer.
Now Red Bull is exactly the same team for me as everyone else. Of course every rider has a choice, but before the contract expires everything will be as I said. I have a very good relationship with Red Bull, but we can say that our paths have now diverged. I only drive for Williams.”
