Speaking to the press at Spa, Lando Norris commented on McLaren’s decision to end its partnership with Daniel Ricciardo ahead of schedule, acknowledging that he would be sad to say goodbye to such a partner.
Lando Norris: “Of course we had a fierce rivalry with each other, because we both want to win races, we want to get on the podium, so these two years weren’t easy, but they were very interesting.
Daniel and I get along very well, we always try to help each other – personally he helped me a lot. Working with him is a pleasure, although it often happens that partners hardly communicate with each other. But we have a lot of good memories of him, we often exchange jokes and laugh about it together, so now of course I’m sad.
But all this just emphasizes how difficult Formula 1 is, how difficult it is to play at a high level. But I have a lot of respect for Daniel and I am sure that his career in Formula 1 will continue. I hope we will continue to fight with him on the tracks next year.
He is a very talented rider and I learned a lot from him. Ahead of the second part of the season, we will continue to work together to complete the championship as best we can. And what exactly did not go well with him, and what difficulties he experienced, it is best to ask him.
Yes, we’ve always shared our impressions of the car, but talking to each other about the sensations we experience behind the wheel is one thing, and driving on the track is another. All this is not so simple, and in the end it is not my job to analyze the work of a partner. First of all, I am focused on solving my own problems and always do my best to get the best possible results for the team.
When asked how he felt about taking on the role of team leader if a driver as young as Oscar Piastri moved to McLaren, Norris replied: “If my new team-mate is a pleasure to work with , then I would be satisfied I do not know yet who it will be, but I am ready for such cooperation, although of course I will have to solve new serious tasks.
If this rider is younger than me, then I will experience a strange feeling that I am older and more experienced, and that will be unusual. But for now I’m not thinking about it because I’m completely focused on the rest of the races of the season.”
