Speaking at a press conference at Spa, Fernando Alonso shared some details of the story of his upcoming move to Aston Martin, stressing that this project seems attractive and promising to him as it is heavily invested.
Fernando Alonso “I got a call from Aston Martin and offered this opportunity after Sebastian announced he would retire at the end of the year. Then we negotiated and reached an agreement.
I think this is a very attractive project, in recent years it has had some serious investment, a lot of new talented people have come to the team – engineers, designers, and a new base is being built in Silverstone.
Overall, it seemed to me that this is an interesting project with a great future, and we decided it was the right step. Although of course there are always certain risks, because no one has foresight. In Formula 1, just like in any other sport, you either win or you don’t. It doesn’t matter if you finish fourth, ninth or thirteenth. You are either the first or one of the losers.
I think we all strive to be at the top of the podium, and there are certain ingredients in the Aston Martin project that make it promising. Usually investing in Formula 1 means success. Let’s see if we can make the path to the top as short as possible and reach high speeds next year.”
At the same time, Alonso made it clear that he initially intended to continue working with Alpine F1, but the negotiation process with the Renault works team has not progressed for several months.
“I consider the move to Aston Martin to be logical as this team was very keen to work with me, they believe I am able to show good results on the track and contribute to the development of this project.
In addition, I can say that I thought it would be good to make way for such a young and talented rider as Oscar Piastri, so everyone should have benefited from my move to Alpine.
And that Piastri, as it turned out, is not continuing the collaboration with Alpine either, is a completely different story.
Alonso also added that he had informed Alpine in advance of his decision to change the team: “I informed Laurent Rossi, Luca de Meo, president of Renault, and even my mechanics and engineers before the statements Everyone who was aware of my negotiations with Alpine knew this, but Otmar Szafnauer did not participate in the negotiations.Probably Rossi and de Meo simply did not inform him, so he was surprised when Aston Martin released their statement .”
