This year there are two American stages on the calendar – in Miami and Austin, and in 2023 a race in Las Vegas will be added. Formula 1’s popularity in the US is growing, but Austin promoter Bobby Epstein believes the real popularity will come when an American racer who can win races appears in the championship.
Bobby Epstein: “Americans will certainly be proud when a racer from the US appears in Formula 1, but the real popularity will only come when we have a racer who can win Grand Prix. I think this is going to happen in a few years and it’s going to be a real turning point, it’s going to have a much bigger impact than the series on Netflix.
I follow the performance of young American drivers, but I understand that in addition to the skill of the pilot, it takes a great car to win. If Colton Herta gets into Formula 1, you have to hope McLaren has a really fast car, or wait for him to end up in Red Bull or Mercedes.
