Formula 3: Collet takes pole in Spa

Chao Collet won qualifying for the seventh round of the Formula 3 season at Spa. For the Brazilian driver of the MP Motorsport team, this was the first pole of his career.

It had stopped raining in Spa at the start of qualifying, but the track remained wet, so the riders started on wet tires for the first attempt.

Oliver Berman took the lead after the first fast lap ahead of Leclerc, Sosi, Hadjar and Martin. Juan Manuel Correa ruined his attempt by going off the track, but with no consequences for the car.

Ten minutes after the start of the session, first yellow and then red flags appeared in the second sector. The reason was Jack Crawford’s departure. The Prema racer turned around in some corners 12-13, the car stopped against the movement, Jack tried to turn around but got stuck in a gravel box.

The intermission lasted nine minutes. During this time, the asphalt dried up sufficiently, so that after qualifying resumed, everyone took to the track on slicks. It took the drivers a few laps to get the tires up to temperature, after which they started attacking. The leading Berman’s first result was overtaken by Kylen Frederick, but he was directly ahead of Ido Cohen and Isaac Hajjar.

An excellent lap was a success for Victor Martin, who led protocol, but half a minute later Chao Collet was even faster. The speeds gradually increased, causing the riders to replace each other at the top of protocol on each lap.

As a result, Collet left the best time, with a lead of 0.262 seconds over Zane Maloney. In the closing minutes, the championship leader, Isaac Hadjar, stopped due to problems with the car on the track. As a result, Isaac qualified only 23rd, but his main rival in the title race, Victor Marten, only posted a 24th fastest time. Alexander Smolyar qualified seventh.

On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. Zach O’Sullivan will start tomorrow’s race from pole position. Juan Manuel Correa starts with him from the front row.
