Lewis Hamilton answered questions from students from London educational institutions united in the Mulberry School Trust (Mulberry School Fund), whose mission is to provide young people with the highest quality and comprehensive education†
Q: Do you ever get tired of racing?
Lewis Hamilton: No, I don’t get tired of racing because my job consists of many different elements. This isn’t just racing as such, not just driving laps as some people think.
We work with a large team of specialists to upgrade the car, make commercials, do photo shoots, travel the world, on the way to where the races take place. It is necessary to follow the training regimen, and then, of course, the most fun begins – the race!
I would compare it to going to an amusement park every weekend and riding a roller coaster, besides all the tracks are very different. So you always take on new challenges and that never gets boring.
Q: You have visited different parts of the world, but where did you like the most?
Lewis Hamilton: Maybe in Indonesia. It has beautiful weather, great local food, very interesting culture. The people who live in this country are among the most friendly and hospitable people. They show special care for you, and I really like this atmosphere.
Q: If you were 12 years old, would you study science, technology, engineering and math?
Lewis Hamilton: Yes, of course, at age 12 I would have done all of this. Indeed, in my youth I did not have the opportunity to seriously study these disciplines, and no one tried to focus on them. Fortunately, I was involved in racing, but my experience today suggests that all of these topics should be studied.
I suppose if I had ever studied engineering I would be better prepared for racing now, I would be more versed in technology.
Q: If you hadn’t become a racing driver, what area would you try to make a career in?
Lewis Hamilton: I have always loved music, but it remains to be seen if I would have had the opportunity to become a superstar in show business! But maybe I’d rather make music, produce music.
If it’s not music, I’d love to work at NASA! However, for this you have to be very, very smart and well educated, defend some diplomas and obtain all possible scientific degrees. (laughs)
Q: What do you think about when you race and drive a Formula 1 car?
Lewis Hamilton: During the race you are completely focused on achieving the goal. All the preparation you did before the start, all your knowledge and experience – under pressure, all this piles up into a certain block that helps you always achieve the maximum and avoid mistakes.
At the same time, you experience an adrenaline rush, emotions go wild – there is fear and joy and joyful excitement. It’s the coolest roller coaster you’ll ever ride, but the difference is you’re in control here. And the decisions you make determine what you can achieve and the result you show.
