The Belgian Grand Prix on Friday had three AlphaTauri drivers on the track – Yuki Tsunoda, Pierre Gasly and Liam Lawson, who made his Formula 1 debut in the official weekend session and replaced Gasly in the first practice session. The team noted that they still need to work on making the car more competitive at the Spa.
Yuki Tsunoda (13th): “Good day, although the weather conditions are far from ideal, we were able to collect a lot of information. Today we saw the traditional weather for Spa – it only rained on part of the track – it was difficult because of this, but I like the track and I enjoyed the day.
It’s great to get back behind the wheel after the summer holidays, enjoy the ride and find the rhythm. In the second training we made a good step forward, but this is not enough. We know the areas we need to work on to add more in qualifying and in the race.”
Pierre Gasly (14th): “It’s great to be behind the wheel again after the summer holidays. In the first training session, Liam worked instead of me – I tried to help him and gave some advice. Driving at a Grand Prix is a great experience for a young racer. I think he enjoyed it.
As for my work, it was not easy due to missing the first session, but we were still able to collect information. There is still a lot of work to be done – it is necessary to adjust the balance sheet for tomorrow. In the evening we study the collected data to find the best solution. Overall, I’m happy with how the day went.
Several drivers will lose positions at the start and we have to take this opportunity and try to get as high on the grid as possible.”
Liam Lawson (19th in the first session): “I enjoyed driving the car on this legendary track – an incredible experience! The car drove well and allowed a lot more than I thought, so it took some getting used to. I gradually increased it pace on the hard tires and by the end of the session I was ready to attack the soft ones – it’s a shame I didn’t have the chance to do so.
I want to thank AlphaTauri and Red Bull for the opportunity. It’s great to spend the weekend with the team – for me it’s a huge step forward compared to Formula 2. There are a lot more people in the team than I’m used to, but for a young driver it’s a great chance to understand how the Formula 1 team works and learn as much as possible. I have loved every second of today – I am very grateful for this opportunity.”
