The start of Formula 2 qualifying in Spa was delayed by five minutes, it was drizzling, the asphalt was wet, but then the rain practically stopped, the track started to dry out, so the riders immediately started on slicks.
However, the conditions remained difficult and already at the start of the first fast lap Jack Duane turned around and soon on the track at the exit of the 1st corner the car of Yuri Vips also stopped – also after a corner.
The session was interrupted by red flags, but not for long. Markus Armstrong, a Hitech Grand Prix rider, was one of the first to set a more or less representative time with a lap time of 2:00.353, but it was clear that this result would be achieved.
During the session it became clear that it was not easy for the riders to keep the cars on track, they even slipped on soft tires in corners and Felipe Drugovic, the youth championship leader, who plays for MP Motorsport, adapted. the fastest under these conditions, the first to complete a lap faster than 2 minutes.
At the same time, Armstrong moved up to second, followed by Dennis Hauger and Ralph Boschung in protocol.
With six minutes to go into qualifying David Beckman was driving on Drugovic’s improved schedule and looked like he could do better, but at the final chicane his car ran into traffic, there was a rather harrowing moment and the German driver even had to go off track to avoid a collision.
Meanwhile, the track dried up and several riders took turns ascending to the front line at once: Jan Doohan, Liam Lawson and Richard Fershhor were there, but Drugovich pushed them all aside as he completed the next lap in 1:58.232. This result was almost 0.7 seconds better than Duane and it looked like no one could block it.
Many tried, most notably Enzo Fittipaldi showed the second result, Logan Sargent climbed to the third line, but Drugovic still took pole.
This is the third achievement by an MP Motorsport driver in the 2022 season. For pole position in Formula 2, two additional bonus points will be awarded, further extending Felipe’s already solid advantage. He is already 23 points ahead of Theo Purscher.
