Domenicali: Sainz must remain calm

Carlos Sainz started the 2022 season quite strong, finishing 2nd in Bahrain and 3rd in Saudi Arabia, but it seems the Spanish Ferrari driver was unlucky after that.

All sorts of difficulties started to haunt him – in Melbourne these were red flags in qualifying and technical difficulties before the start of the Grand Prix, after which it all ended in pilot error and retirement. At Imola, McLaren driver Daniel Ricciardo crashed into Ferrari No 55 on lap one, after which Sainz went off the track and got stuck in the gravel.

At the same time, ahead of the Emilia-Romagna Grand Prix, the Italian team confirmed that the contract with Carlos had been extended for another two years. To justify the confidence of the Scuderia, of course, he has to show results, and ideally it is better to rehabilitate already in Miami.

Stefano Domenicali, a former Ferrari team leader and current F1 president and CEO, gave the Spaniard some advice.

“Situations like this need to be tackled psychologically,” he told Italian TV channel RAI2 on air. – Of course Carlos is a very talented driver, but at Imola he was just unlucky when he made contact with Riccardo’s car on a slippery track. But it is in such situations that the rider has to show intuition, because if you can’t handle it properly, it can lead to problems.

At the start of the weekend at Imola, Sainz’s contract with Ferrari was extended for a further two years, so he shouldn’t be under any pressure. He just has to stay calm and then he will show good results again, I have no doubt about that.
