At a press conference in Spa, Audi confirmed its entry into Formula 1 for the 2026 season as a powertrain supplier.
The statement does not say which team Audi will supply engines to, but we are talking about Sauber – this will only be confirmed at the end of the contract with title sponsor Alfa Romeo.
Markus DuismannChairman of the Board of Management of Audi: “Motorsport is an integral part of Audi’s DNA, and Formula 1 is both a global arena for our brand and a laboratory developing advanced technologies.
The combination of high efficiency and a competitive start always becomes the engine of progress and contributes to the diffusion of new technologies. The time has come for us to enter the World Championship, because Formula 1 and Audi have a common goal in terms of environmental sustainability.
Audi is registered with the FIA as a powertrain manufacturer and from 2026 we will race in Formula 1. Building an engine takes time, so we want to start with that. But we are already negotiating with several championship teams to choose a potential partner and we will announce our decision later.”
Oliver HoffmannHead of Advanced Development at Audi: “As the championship moves towards environmental sustainability and with a major technology program already poised to achieve these goals by 2026, we can talk about the emergence of a new Formula 1. Formula 1 is changing and Audi changes wants to actively support these changes.
With a direct link between our F1 project and Audi’s advanced technology development department, we expect a strong synergy effect.”
Stefano DomenicalicHead of Formula 1: “I am delighted to welcome the iconic car brand Audi to Formula 1. This is an important moment for our sport and a testament to the tremendous strength of our global platform, which continues to grow.
The arrival of Audi shows that the transition from Formula 1 in 2026 to hybrid engines on environmentally friendly fuels is the future solution for the automotive sector. We are all looking forward to seeing the Audi logo on the grid and hearing from them about their plans soon.”
The Audi power station will be developed at its base in Neuburg and the chassis will be built on the Sauber base in Hinwil, which has a modern wind tunnel.
A similar contract between Porsche and Red Bull should be confirmed in the coming days.
