Mick Schumacher and Kevin Magnussen set 15th and 18th fastest times in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, but after penalties have been applied Kevin will move to 12th at the start and Mick to 20th. The Haas riders hope to gain positions on Sunday.
Kevin Magnussen (18th): “I did a bad lap and made a few mistakes. The second lap I rode as I should have, but unfortunately the rest could add to it. I don’t know if we had the pace to qualify for a higher position, but tomorrow many will be fined and I will reclaim the places at the start. I hope the pace in the race will be higher.
There are always opportunities at Spa, so as always I am optimistic about the future.”
Mick Schumacher (15th): “Qualifying was better than we had hoped. We thought we wouldn’t leave the first part, so the result can be considered a pleasant surprise. Tomorrow will be a difficult race given the start from the end of the pack, but it’s easy to overtake at this track, so I’ll do my best.
Today I didn’t do as many laps as I wanted, but I hope everything will be fine tomorrow. I have high expectations as Spa races are often very eventful. I’m sure there will be a lot of struggle tomorrow.”
Gunther Steiner, Team boss: “After Friday practice, we improved in the Saturday session. Yesterday I didn’t think we could get out of the first part of qualifying, but we did. Kevin locked his wheels in Turn 8 on his second attempt in the first session, and wasn’t very fast in Turns 12 and 13, so he didn’t go any further.
Mick went into the second part, which is very good because in the third practice he didn’t do a lap in qualifying mode. In the second part he blocked the wheels in the first corner – it was all over. On the one hand I am surprised that we managed to pass, but on the other I am disappointed because we did not show the result, with the speed.
Kevin starts twelfth – he has a chance to earn points as compared to Friday his car has gotten faster. After applying all the penalties, Mick starts last. It will be difficult for him to recoup from this position, but you can never say never – tomorrow is a long day.
