McLaren drivers Lando Norris and Daniel Ricciardo set tenth and eleventh times in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix. After applying the penalties, Daniel starts in seventh and Lando in eighteenth. The team expects two cars to score points in the race.
Lando Norris (10th): “I’m quite happy with today, because we got the most out of it. I didn’t really attack in the final, but if I put in a new set of tires I could probably show the seventh fastest time. However, our priority was the strategy in the race.
Talking about pace, we’re not in the positions we want to be yet. Tomorrow we will change something – I hope this will allow us to break through to the top and earn points. It will be a long race – we don’t know how it will end, but we are in a good position and we will try to do our best.”
Daniel Riccardo (11th): “I’m a little disappointed because some little things cost it to get to the final, but it is what it is. I think we did pretty well. In the morning the team changed the spec of the wing – it wasn’t planned, but we did a great job.
I don’t know how it will go in the race. I will regain a few positions on the grid with penalties and start seventh, which is good. Staying ahead of Alex Albon is an obvious goal, even if he’s been fast all weekend. Fast rivals start behind, but I’ll try to hold them back for as long as possible. If you manage to drive well in the first segment and create a gap, this will help in the future.
In general I am satisfied with the speed of the car, only a little short again at the decisive moment. We’re ready to race – it’s been a busy week, but I want to see the start lights as soon as possible and do 44 laps!”
Andreas Seidli, team leader: “After all penalties have been applied, we start seventh and eighteenth. Unfortunately Daniel did not make the final. As for Lando, we have decided not to give him a new set of Soft in the final, to save him for the race. Given the circumstances, we have reached a certain conclusion about qualifying. I hope this will give us advantages in the race, which we are now fully focused on.
The goal is to score points with two cars. I hope the unusual line-up at the start will provide an exciting race that we are looking forward to.”
