Carlos Sainz: I’m not happy I got behind Red Bull

Carlos Sainz set a second fastest time in qualifying for the Belgian Grand Prix, but thanks to a penalty from Max Verstappen he will start from pole on Sunday. The Spanish Ferrari driver hopes to take advantage of his position and win the race, but notes the big advantage of Red Bull Racing.

His teammate Charles Leclerc, who set the fourth fastest time, was also impressed by the high speed of Max Verstappen and Sergio Pérez. After all penalties have been applied, Charles must start in sixteenth place.

Carlos Sainz (2nd): “I’m happy to start from pole tomorrow. Of course I’m not happy to be behind Max and Red Bull this weekend. You have to understand why the Red Bull car is so fast on this track.

Anyway, pole is a great place to start and I will try to win tomorrow. I believe our race pace is higher than qualifying, but such a backlog of Red Bull raises questions in my mind about how tomorrow’s race will go. There is no doubt that we need to add more.”

Charles Leclerc (4th): “I think the potential was possible to go faster. Given the penalty, we didn’t prepare for qualifying as we usually do. Getting behind Max is a bit of a concern – Red Bull has been very fast from the start of the weekend and we have no answer why. We have to keep working and do our best tomorrow.

Today we couldn’t do anything to change the starting position because the machine is not at Red Bull’s level. In race mode we are much closer to them. At least that’s how it was on Friday practice. Let’s see what happens tomorrow, but it will be strange if we are faster than them in the race after qualifying like this.
