Barbados season debutant Zane Maloney took his first Formula 3 win at Spa on Sunday. Like the day before, Roman Stanek climbed to the second step of the podium and Saturday’s race winner Oliver Berman rounded out the top three.
Pole holder Chao Collet held onto the lead in the first corner after the start, but was attacked by Zane Maloney in the fifth. Both riders cut the corner, Maloney took the lead and Collet, on his return to the track, forced Francesco Pizzi into the gravel, who lost third place as a result of this maneuver.
Pizzi’s troubles continued into the final corner when Kush Maini collided with the Charouz driver and knocked him off the track. Victor Marten was also injured in the incident. For Maini and Marten, the race was over and Pizzi was able to continue in 26th place.
On lap 2 at Turn 5, Oliver Goethe overtook Collet for second. At the same time, the team told Maloney to return the position to Collet, who played off-track in the first round. As a result, Zane missed both Goethe and Chao.
The track was in virtual safety car mode, so the marshals removed the damaged cars in the final corner. On the third lap a real safety car came onto the track.
Alexander Smolyar kept the seventh position from which he started. Championship leader Isaac Hajjar rose from 23rd to 18th place.
The restart was given in the sixth round. For turn five, Collet overtook Oliver Goethe for the lead, and on exit from turn seven, Goethe lost another position to Maloney. At this point, the stewards had reviewed the events of the first lap and awarded Collet a five-second penalty for returning unsafely to the track and interfering with Pizzi.
In the seventh round, Smolyar lost one position – he was overtaken by William Alatalo. Behind Grégoire, Sosi crashed the car exiting corner 7 after contact with Correa – the safety car again left the track.
The restart was given in the eleventh round. Maloney attacked the lead Collet and, unlike on the first lap, neatly overtook and led the pack. Once on an empty track, Zane started to pull away and showed the best lap.
On lap fourteen David Vidales overtook Smolyar for eighth. Roman Stanek overtook Chao Collet and moved up to second. On the next lap in the battle for fifth place, Saturday’s race winner Oliver Berman overtook Johnny Edgar. On the final lap, Berman also overtook Oliver Goethe and climbed to fourth.
Zane Maloney led the race to victory, finishing one second ahead of Roman Stanek. Chao Collet finished third, but after a five-second penalty, the Brazilian dropped to sixth, missing Berman on the podium. Alexander Smolyar finished the race in ninth.
Individual leader Isaac Hajjar (106 points) failed to score. Oliver Berman moved up to second and is just one point behind Hajjar. Victor Martin is in third place with 104 points. Arthur Leclerc (101 points) is in fourth place. The next Formula 3 race will take place in Zandvoort next week.
