New Red Bull chassis provides even more speed

Max Verstappen’s speed on the track at Spa surprised many, especially Ferrari, as Carlos Sainz lost to him by more than six tenths in qualifying. But the Dutch driver was one of those who was fined for changing the power plant, so he starts from a distant 14th position, and now everyone is interested to see how he will pay for himself.

Rivals have something to worry about as it seems Max showed such speed even on the old chassis. At least that’s what RacingNews365’s experts think, citing their sources and believing that the current World Champion will get a new chassis, lighter and stronger, in one of the upcoming phases of the championship. At the same time, Ferrari is confident that Verstappen is capable of such impressive track speed at Spa, as the chassis has already been replaced.

Be that as it may, they say the new monocoque is a whopping 5kg lighter than the previous one, bringing Red Bull Racing close to the minimum allowable car weight of 798kg. Calculations show that this results in an increase in speed of approximately 0.2 seconds per lap.

The weight reduction of the monocoque was achieved through the use of more advanced technologies for the production of components from composite materials. According to RacingNews365, the different orientation of the carbon fiber layers during the molding process made it possible to reduce the thickness of the chassis while making it stronger.

The technology has been improved as a result of in-depth research using the mathematical “finite element method”, which is widely used to solve problems in the mechanics of a deformable body. Advanced software makes it possible to accurately calculate and simulate the loads in different parts of the chassis, after which composite engineers decide how to alternate and orient the layers of carbon fiber.

Solving such problems requires serious investment, both in the development phase and in the production process, but it seems that Red Bull has decided to spend another $4 million for these purposes, which the FIA allowed the teams to compensate for high inflation.
