Seven-time British Formula 1 champion Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton reacted to the fact that the Spanish pilot “Alpin” Fernando Alonso after an incident in the first lap of the Belgian Grand Prix called him an idiot.
Hamilton admitted he was “definitely responsible” for the collision with an opponent. Hamilton’s car jumped after he and Alonso collided on the opening lap. FIA stewards looked into the incident but did not sanction anyone.
“Today was definitely my fault,” Hamilton quotes the race . “Unfortunately, it’s motorsport, I gave it my all. I tried to overtake outside turn 5, but I just didn’t leave enough space. It wasn’t intentional, it just happened. I remember just looking down at the ground to realize I was high enough.
I heard something break in the gearbox and I was ordered to stop. At this point you hope you can continue in the same spirit, but that was not destined to happen,” Hamilton said.
Hamilton was heavily criticized by Alonso immediately after the collision. Alonso called him an idiot on the radio and said Hamilton only knew how to drive when he started from pole position.
“I don’t really have an answer to that,” Hamilton said. “I know what it’s like in the middle of a race. Glad to know how he treats me! It’s better that he tell me in person. It was not intentional, I take responsibility for that. That’s what adults do.
– It was an incident in the first lap, these things happen, especially in this corner, – said Alonso. — There is a lot going on and people usually cut the corner at turn 6 and get back on the track at turn 7. It’s a difficult part of the circuit, it was a racing incident, there’s nothing more to say.
Hamilton retired from the race after the incident, Alonso eventually finished fifth.
