Mercedes had a failed qualifying in Zandvoort, lost heavily to Red Bull Racing, but performed better in the race. After the finish, George Russell admitted that the team is still looking for an approach to the car.
George Russell: “I don’t think we could hope after qualifying that we would lose just two seconds to Sainz at the finish. We assumed we would be ahead of Leclerc and we understood that we were unlikely to beat Verstappen. Max ended up finishing further than we thought and we were closer to Ferrari than expected. Some of it is positive, some of it isn’t.
The team suspects that Sunday’s warmer track temperatures helped us to perform better in the race. But in qualifying we failed and lost about a second on the circle just because of the tires. It is clear that the circuit in Spa exposes the weaknesses of our car.
I hope the situation in Zandvoort will improve, but to be honest things are a bit confusing and there are no guarantees. After qualifying we learned something interesting, which may help to understand why we weren’t as competitive here as we had hoped.
I can’t look that far ahead, but I would like to think that the Spa stage will remain the worst for us this season.”
