There was little overtaking at Zandvoort last year, but Mario Isola, head of Pirelli’s motorsport division, believes the new cars and new tires will make the race more spectacular.
Mario Isola: “Last year Zandvoort was a spectacular addition to the calendar. The most difficult parts for the tires, turns 3 and 14, are driven at high speed and have a constant impact on the car due to downward pressure and side loading. This, along with other track features, was the reason for choosing the three heaviest compounds for this stage.
The new tires introduced this season should make overtaking easier. Last year most drivers limited themselves to one pit stop to maintain their position on the track, but this time we can put more emphasis on softer compounds, which will lead to more pit stops and a clearer fight.”
