Haas F1 wants to do well at Zandvoort

Günter Steiner hopes his drivers can compete for points at Zandvoort, as the Haas team believes the Dutch circuit is better suited to the VF-22 than Spa.

Q: At the Belgian Grand Prix, the team’s drivers failed to realize the potential of the VF-22, but how did Kevin Magnussen and Mick Schumacher rate the performance of the upgraded version of the car?
Gunther Steiner: It’s hard to talk about their impressions, because we didn’t shine on the Belgian circuit. But we made sure that the data obtained over the weekend is consistent with the calculations made during the wind tunnel study – this is good, and now this is the most important.

Q: There are still eight races to go, and given the information about the car collected by the team, is it possible to say which of the remaining tracks would be the most suitable for the VF-22?
Gunther Steiner: I’ll start with the track, where we’re going to have a hard time. Monza is not our favorite track, but I hope we will compete for good results in Zandvoort and in Japan. In Austin we always have small problems, but I hope we can overcome them this year.

Q: Last year the Dutch Grand Prix returned to the championship calendar and was remembered for having filled the stands in Zandvoort with a whole army of Max Verstappen fans, as well as his win at home. What surprised you the most then?
Gunther Steiner: I think it was the best example of what can be arranged on the old track, if you do things in a new way. I think the local organisers, the promoter of the Dutch Grand Prix, have done a great job of reviving the old circuit and adapting it to the demands of modern Formula 1. They deserve all the credit, because now everyone is watching just looking forward to returning to Zandvoort.

Q: Mick already rehearsed this song last year, but Kevin will be performing there for the first time. How quickly does he adapt to new circuits and what can the team do to prepare him?
Gunther Steiner: I think the riders themselves know how to prepare well to get to know the new track. It will of course take a while to feel the grip once practice starts, but Kevin will get the job done like he did on any other unknown track.

I hope Friday’s practice will go smoothly and that we can do enough laps to prepare for qualifying. I am not at all afraid that Kevin will not be able to adapt to the characteristics of Zandvoort.
