Mick Schumacher remains possible without Ferrari support

Mick Schumacher has been a driver at the Ferrari Youth Academy for several years and will make his Formula 1 debut in 2021 thanks to the support of the Scuderia. However, reports appeared in the European press on Tuesday that Schumacher’s contract with the Ferrari Academy will expire at the end of 2022, and Maranello has no plans to renew it.

Not working with Ferrari does not mean that Mick automatically loses his place at Haas, but it will clearly reduce his chances of remaining with the US team in 2023. Last week it was revealed that another Ferrari protégé, Antonio Giovinazzi, will team up with Haas for Friday practice in Monza and Austin. This makes the former Alfa Romeo driver a prime candidate to replace Schumacher.

If Mick is left with no contract at Haas, then Alpine or Williams are the only options left for him to continue his career in Formula 1. In turn, Alpine looks to Pierre Gasly and AlphaTauri can invite Colton Herta to replace him. In this case, Mick’s option remains with Williams, as the team will most likely not renew Nicholas Latifi’s contract. But it is possible that Schumacher will have to compete with much more experienced Daniel Riccardo for a spot in Williams.

Racingnews365 has approached Ferrari with the question whether it is true that Mick Schumacher’s contract will expire at the end of the season and will not be renewed. A Scuderia spokesperson gave a short answer: “Mick is part of the Ferrari Racing Academy family, but we never reveal the details of contracts with our drivers.

We will be following Mick’s performance this year and will decide together later which option is best for him.”
