The historic Williams FW12C, which Riccardo Patrese raced in 1989, is up for auction by RM Sotheby’s in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The auction will take place on September 9, and organizers expect a rare example to go up for sale for quite a bit of money – from 1.25 to 1.75 million Swiss francs.
The FW12 is the first Williams chassis built in 1988 and ran on the RS1 V10 3.5, the famous Renault engine that went on to win many titles. With this particular car, serial number FW12C/10, Patrese drove four races in 1989, including 3rd in France, 4th in Germany, and also won pole position in Hungary.
It is this fact that makes the car unique in its own way: it was the only qualifying that season where pole went to non-McLaren racers.
Immediately after the end of that season, the car was bought directly from Frank Williams, team leader and co-owner, and then ended up in private collections. The auction organizers also admit that the engine on it is defective.
