On Monday, the FIA Contract Recognition Board (CRB) began work in Geneva, tasked with dealing with Oscar Piastri’s situation and figuring out which team, Alpine or McLaren, will take precedence over the promising Australian driver.
When asked to comment on what happened, McLaren Racing CEO Zach Brown did not and offered to wait for CRB’s conclusions, but said his team had different scenarios for further action.
“There’s a CRB meeting going on right now, which has already been reported – I think it’s best if we share our comments after this meeting,” Brown said while on the US radio program Speed City Broadcasting . – We have several options, and it is clear that one of them is now being considered by this council, otherwise we would not be present at the meeting! Let’s just wait for it to be over and then move on.”
CRB’s decision will take several days, but Brown has made it clear that they have a list of candidates in case Piastri fails to move to McLaren. In particular, he mentioned the names of several IndyCar drivers who have already gained experience testing a Formula 1 car.
“I’ve tried to introduce myself, but Andreas Seidl is against it, so I’m the only driver we’ve definitely crossed off the list already! Brown joked. “We have a testing program and Colton Herta has done a great job; Pato O’Ward drove our car late last year and did a great job as well.
In the US, of course, we still have to deal with Alex Palow’s situation. Let’s see how it turns out, but we are determined to put him behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car. All these drivers compete in the championship, where there is a very high level of rivalry, and they have all achieved many victories.
I think IndyCar is a top level championship, so there are a lot of different options, and we’ll look at them in turn.
Alpine F1 boss Otmar Szafnauer believes CRB’s decision should be expected by the end of the week. At the same time, he emphasized that his team also has several candidates for the place of new partner Esteban Okon: “I think CRB will need time to figure everything out – not so much, but it will take a few days. We will probably find out about the decision at the end of the week, when we arrive in Zandvoort at all.
We have our own list of candidates and as soon as we know the CRB’s ruling, we will of course immediately start serious negotiations.”
