Ferrari started the season confidently, but it was at Imola, on the Italian circuit, in the team’s home race, that they lost to Red Bull Racing on all fronts. The F1-75 was slightly slower than the RB18, the Scuderia’s tactics weren’t perfect and Charles Leclerc missed third place by his own mistake when chasing Sergio Pérez, hoping to fight for second, but he overdid it .
He was also lucky not to crash the car, but only damaged the front fender, and after replacing it he was able to finish sixth. Carlos Sainz withdrew from the race on the first lap, but through no fault of his own.
In the past, it happened more than once that the Italian team made a mistake after a series of several successful races, after which the fighting spirit and confidence were replaced by some confusion and it was no longer possible to earn back.
But Ferrari president John Elkann says that with Mattia Binotto in charge of the Scuderia, the atmosphere in Maranello is different.
“We started building F1-75 in 2020 and put Mattia in charge of this project, despite the difficulties that had to be overcome that season,” Elkann said in an interview with the championship’s official website. – We have changed our culture and now we are not looking for the culprits; now the team has a reporting system at all levels and we have created an environment conducive to team building. But more importantly, we combine high ambitions with humility and modesty.
We said we would be competitive and we achieved that. But from being competitive to winning a championship is the same distance as from Earth to the moon or even to Mars. It is very difficult to achieve this.
We know championships are won and lost on the last lap of the last race of the season, and it depends on a lot of factors – some we can influence, some we can’t. But that is precisely why Formula 1 is such an exciting sport and everyone at Ferrari is inspired by this challenge.
The results at Imola disappointed us a bit, but failures are part of racing and we have to keep our spirits up. In some races we can fail, but I think we have a fast car. So we have to keep smiling and prepare for the next races.”
