Magnussen: Albert Park should be good

Returning to Formula 1, Kevin Magnussen scored points in two races and is optimistic about continuing…

Q: In your first Formula 1 race in 2014 you finished second with McLaren and you finished sixth in 2019 with Haas F1. What do you remember when you return to Albert Park?
Kevin Magnussen: I don’t know if there is anything special about this track, but I did have some very successful weekends at Albert Park.

In 2018 we should have finished fourth and fifth. The race in Australia has always worked out well for us, but I think it’s just a coincidence.

I’ve always enjoyed coming to Australia, to Melbourne. There is already something special about this race, because for years he opened the season. I hope everything goes well this time too.

Q: At the beginning of the weekend the asphalt on the street track is quite slippery, in Albert Park you need a car with a stable front. What do you expect from VF-22 on the Australian stage?
Kevin MagnussenA: This year we have a competitive machine. We’re still learning to work with it, but I feel like we’re stronger at low and medium speeds than at high speeds. It’s not that we were bad at high speeds, but I feel like our strengths are more pronounced at low and medium speeds, so everything should be fine in Albert Park.

Q: The time difference between Europe and Melbourne is nine hours. Do you have your own secret to rapid acclimation? What advice would you give fans?
Kevin Magnussen: Due to the big time difference we always arrive early in Australia. It’s important to go to work right away and get up in the morning, even if you’ve only slept for two hours.

Get up when it’s time to get up, exercise, eat at the right time and just get into the rhythm as much as possible. During the flight you can plan in advance whether you should sleep or stay awake.

Q: This weekend Haas F1 is holding the 125th Grand Prix. You played a big part in the history of the team, you played 81 races with it. What moments do you remember? What is special about this team?
Kevin Magnussen: Haas F1 is a real racing team. It exists because Gene Haas is a passionate racer and has a large company that he can race with. Our team has a very simple structure. It is a compact, small team. I know every employee – for Formula 1 this is a unique situation.

The structure of Haas F1 is different from other teams – we outsource a lot, but this simplifies communication and offers certain advantages. If a problem arises, fix it and move on. For large teams it takes more time.
