Formula 1 sporting director Ross Brawn regrets that a third team, Mercedes, is not involved in the dispute over Ferrari and Red Bull Racing’s victories this year.
In the individual standings, Charles Leclerc leads the way with two wins, twice the best lap of the race and once on the podium. 27 points behind him is Max Verstappen, who also won two races, and also a sprint at Imola, but in the previous stages he had to retire twice due to technical problems.
Mercedes racers are not yet claiming high results as the W13 car clearly lacks speed, but Brown hopes the team that has won so many championships will still join in and be able to fight the leaders.
“To be honest, I was hoping Mercedes would be more competitive at this stage of the season,” he admitted. – The start of the season for the team turned out to be difficult, but they are working incredibly hard and I thought we could see some progress already in Imola. However, the problems seem to persist. Although if a third team joined the dispute for wins, it would be fine.
The rivalry between Leclerc and Verstappen has been going well so far, everything has gone without collisions on the track, although we have experienced very sharp duels on more than one occasion. This is in stark contrast to last year’s showdown between Max and Lewis Hamilton, as it took on a contact character more than once over the course of the races.
“Charles and Max have a different dynamic and we see that on track,” said Brown. “It will be interesting to see how this develops over the course of the season, as the end of the championship gets closer.”
