Max Verstappen dominated the last lap at Spa and after his start from fourteenth position won the race with seventeen seconds ahead of his teammate. Responding to questions from reporters at a press conference in Zandvoort, the Red Bull Racing driver suggested he would not have an overwhelming advantage this weekend.
Max Verstappen: “I think the battle will be tighter this time. The stage in Spa was even better for us than we expected, as the track configuration suited the car perfectly. In Zandvoort you need more downforce, the circle configuration is different, there are fewer straight lines on the track. If we can find the right settings, we’ll be fast again, but the question is how much faster we’ll be than the rest.
We have a fairly efficient and fast car on the straights, but on some tracks we look better, on some – worse. As I said, the Spa was the best match for our car, and thanks to the new features we prepared this year, the car is efficient in a wide range and drives well.
At the start of the season, RB18 was very tough and it took us a while to sort that out. In the first races a lot of weight played against us, but gradually the team corrected the situation. We understand the new scheme better, allowing us to find more and more suitable institutions.
The weekend at the Spa turned out to be good from the first lap. For the first time in five years, the car was immediately fast.”
