Alex Rossi, the IndyCar driver who won the 2016 Indy 500, has some experience in Formula 1 and is excited to host two World Championships in the US this season with the addition of the Miami Grand Prix at Austin Texas Speedway.
There are three American stages in 2023, as a city race in Las Vegas has already been promised, but such a rapid expansion is causing some turmoil in Rossi.
“Honestly, I’m happy for Formula 1 and for America. It’s about time we have a few races in the United States. It’s a big country and why not three grands prix,” Rossi said during the IndyCar Race Weekend in Alabama. “People are starting to pay more attention to motorsport again and understand how interesting it is.
It seems to me that now all forms of motorsport are on the rise because they have a lot in common, and it’s great to be involved in all of this. Still, if Formula 1’s presence in the US market expands, it will of course create competition for IndyCar.
If there are going to be three races here, we need to remember this and make sure we continue to develop our series, plan further steps, work with racers, with teams, improve IndyCar’s image.
If we take the most popular races of our series, for example in Long Beach, in St. Petersburg, in Indianapolis, they gather a large audience, and probably people come to see them, not just because of the races, although mainly for this reason.
But it’s hard to convince anyone to devote three days of their life to watching cars go round in circles because there are so many different kinds of distractions in the modern world. People’s attention is drawn to other things for which he comes to the track and wants to bring family and friends.
In my opinion, Formula 1 stands out because of this special attraction. They know how to do marketing, they know how to promote and advertise their series. I think IndyCar needs to work on that too, and it just needs to be creative to promote our product.
Everyone should remember that we are ultimately in the entertainment industry. That’s why we always talk about the show, about entertainment. But I believe the organizers of our series understand this. And it’s not even about what happens on the track itself – we miss the well-organized excitement around the races that should come with it. †
