Last Thursday it was announced that both FIA race directors, Nils Wittich and Eduardo Freitas, had been diagnosed with Covid-19 and we wrote that their trip to Miami was questionable.
However, according to The Race, Wittich’s business is on the mend, so it’s believed he will be able to complete his duties next weekend. He was the race director at the previous four Grand Prix, and Freitas – his deputy.
While Wittich’s return has not been officially confirmed, an FIA spokesperson told The Race: “The Federation does not disclose medical information about its employees unless it is important to the race management process.”
According to the British edition, Wittich passed a new test for coronavirus at the end of this week, and the result was negative. In theory, this should allow him to fly to the United States.
Freitas would not go to Miami anyway, as he plans to work on the WEC stage in Spa next weekend. That’s why Colin Haywood should be the deputy race director in America.
