The increase in the number of American stages on the calendar benefits the appearance of an American rider. One of the main contenders is Indycar’s 22-year-old American Colton Herta.
In July, Herta conducted two-day tests at the wheel of McLaren, but the team did not report any statistics, as was the case with the testing of another American, Pato O’Ward, who eventually signed a contract with Oscar Piastri.
At Zandvoort, McLaren Racing chief executive Zack Brown said there are no more vacancies in the team, but if Herta could sign with another Formula 1 team, McLaren would not interfere.
Zach Brown: “We would never meddle in a racing career. Racers want to race. It’s great to be able to get back into the fight after missing the season, like Esteban Ocon did and now Oscar Piastri, but we want to encourage riders to race.”
