Formula 3: Maloney wins qualifying Zandvoort

Zane Maloney set the fastest time in qualifying for round 8 of the Formula 3 season at Zandvoort. For the Trident driver this was the second pole of the season after Imola.

When qualifying in the Spa was held on a wet road a week ago, the sun was shining brightly in the Netherlands on Friday. Formula 3 participants immediately took to the track and after two warm-up laps they started to attack.

Isaac Hadjar, the championship leader, was the first to set the fastest time, but his result was surpassed by Victor Martin, Grégoire Sosi, Chao Kollekt, Jack Crawford and Alexander Smolyar. Several drivers, including Zane Maloney, tried to beat Marten’s result but failed, and the ART driver returned to the pit lane as the session leader.

Halfway through qualifying, the riders started on fresh tires for the second attempt. Victor Martin improved his result, but Maloney’s lap was even faster. In the battle for third place, Roman Stanek led Franco Colapinto. Isaac Hajjar showed only the twentieth time.

Six minutes before the end of qualifying, the riders left for the decisive third attempt. Only a few pilots managed to complete their fast laps when red flags appeared on the track less than a minute before the end of the session. The cause was William Alatalo, who crashed into the protective barrier in the third corner.

As a result, no one could beat Maloney’s result and Marten held the second position. Among those who managed to improve their time were Jack Crawford, who rose to third, and Isaac Hajjar, who showed the sixth result.

Oliver Berman, second in the individual standings, was among those who did not have time to complete his lap – he only has a 14th fastest time. Alexander Smolyar and Arthur Leclerc also did not improve – the sixteenth and twentieth time respectively. Sebastian Montoya showed the seventh result in the debut qualifying.

On Saturday, according to the reverse grid rule, the first twelve places start in reverse order. Juan Manuel Correa will start tomorrow’s race from pole position. Together with him, Gregoire Saucy starts from the front row.
