IndyCar: Pato O’Ward dedicates win to Ayrton Senna

Pato O’Ward, a Mexican IndyCar driver for the Arrow McLaren SP team, won the Alabama Grand Prix at Barber Motorsports Park on Sunday.

He dedicated his third win in the American series in memory of Ayrton Senna.

“I dedicate this victory to Ayrton Senna, who passed away 28 years ago. I know how much he means to everyone at McLaren and to McLaren fans around the world,” Pato wrote on his social media pages a few hours after the race.

And immediately after the finish, he admitted that contract negotiations with the Arrow McLaren SP at the start of the season affected his level of performance, and this prevented him from focusing on his work. As a result, in St. Petersburg he finished 12th, in Texas – 15th, but already in Long Beach he rose to 5th place, and now he finally regained his form and achieved success.

“It’s bad when you fight with your own team, don’t you think? noted Pato. “I am pleased that the talks about the future are going well. I was tired of finishing outside the top ten or fifth, so I said to the team, “Let’s win this race and get back in the fight for the championship.”

Thanks to yesterday’s success, the 22-year-old Mexican climbed from the ninth line of the personal classification to fifth.

In December last year, Pato O’Ward had his first experience of driving a Formula 1 car when he took part in tests in Abu Dhabi with a McLaren car, after which he made a very good impression on the team.
