Formula 3: Collet wins Zandvoort sprint

Chao Collet won the Formula 3 sprint at Zandvoort on Saturday. For the Brazilian MP Motorsport driver, this win was the second of the season after the recent success in Saturday’s race in Hungary. Together with him, Juan Manuel Correa (for the first time since the terrible accident at Spa in 2019 in Formula 2) and Zach O’Sullivan took the podium.

Saturday morning, Formula 3 participants met with cloudless skies and bright autumn sun. Pole holder Correa retained the lead at the start. Behind him, Zach O’Sullivan overtook Grégoire Saucey for second before they were both passed by Chao Collet, who started fourth.

Oliver Berman started the race well and rose from 15th to 10th place. Alexander Smolyar won three positions in the first round and moved up to 13th place. Victor Martin climbed from eleventh to seventh place, Isaac Hadjar overtook Sebastian Montoya at the start in the battle for sixth place.

On lap 4, Collet Correa attacked in the first corner and took the lead, but the ART rider immediately counterattacked and recaptured first position. On the next lap, Collet repeated the maneuver – this time the wheel-to-wheel riders drove for several hundred meters, and in the third corner, because of the better trajectory, Chao took the lead and led the race.

At the end of the pack, an equally intense battle unfolded between Brad Benavidez and Rafael Villagomez, who ended up colliding at the first corner on lap 5. Both were able to continue, with Villagomez receiving a 10-second penalty.

Chao Collet gradually broke away from Correa and Juan Manuel in turn increased the lead over Zach O’Sullivan. Johnny Edgar set the best lap and moved up to fourth place ahead of Grégoire Saucey.

On lap thirteen, Arthur Leclair struggled to overtake Kaylen Frederik in the battle for fourteenth place. On lap sixteen, Oliver Berman made a mistake exiting Turn 3 and lost 10th place, skipping Roman Stanek.

In the twentieth round, Smolyar lost two positions – he was in turn overtaken by Franco Colapinto and Arthur Leclerc. Alexander dropped to fourteenth place.

Collet confidently took the race to victory, setting the best time on the final lap, four seconds clear of Correa at the finish. Zack O’Sullivan finished third – for him this is the second podium of the season after Silverstone.

Championship leader Isaac Hadjar finished sixth, extending the lead over his pursuers slightly. Victor Marten returned to second in the individual standings thanks to seventh place, ahead of Oliver Berman, who earned no points.
