McLaren are delighted that the FIA’s Contract Recognition Board has decided in their favor and Oscar Piastri will be Lando Norris’ new teammate next year. But according to McLaren Racing chief executive Zack Brown, if he were Alpine he would have allowed the Australian to work with his new team this year.
Zach Brown: “We signed Oscar Piastri because he is a very fast racer and the level of talent is not inferior to Lando. I think we will have a very strong squad next year.
If we talk about the chance of seeing Oscar in training at the wheel of our car this year, it completely depends on Andreas Seidl, as he plans the team’s work. But Piastri has a valid contract with Alpine, so this should all be discussed at the leadership level of the two teams.
We have not yet made a decision on our plans for the rest of the season, although we have our own test program in which several riders can participate, but Andreas will make certain decisions when the time comes.
Personally, I think that young racers should be given the opportunity to develop, to drive race cars. So if I were Alpine – I admit I’m a little biased here – I’d let Oscar work with his new team.
As for qualifying, he had a good chance of getting into the final session. Obviously the top 3 teams usually occupy the first three rows on the grid, but I think we have a pretty fast car, plus we made some changes to the settings in last practice, so let’s hope we can manage to get into the top ten.
