Charles Leclerc was only 0.021 seconds behind Max Verstappen in qualifying for the Dutch Grand Prix. His teammate Carlos Sainz set the third fastest time and lost by less than a tenth to the pole holder. The Ferrari drivers are confident they can battle for victory in Sunday’s race.
Charles Leclerc (2nd): “I was very close! Max managed a great circle, but our car got better and better during qualifying. In fact, at the very beginning of the session, I was a bit intimidated by Max’s speed on used tires, but in the final I managed to collect all the components and do a lap that guaranteed me second place at the start.
In tomorrow’s race I will do my best. This weekend we are much stronger than the last stage in the Spa, which is nice. We have a high race pace, so the fight against Red Bull will be tight. The most important thing is to start well, and then we’ll see.”
Carlos Sainz (3rd): “I’m glad I did a clean and clear round, but I didn’t have enough to compete with Charles and Max. Overall qualifying wasn’t the easiest, but I think we did a great job.
On this track, it is difficult to work with tires that are subject to heavier loads. Even on long series of laps, the tires overheated noticeably. I think tomorrow will be an interesting race and we will see a lot of events, despite the fact that it is difficult to overtake on the track. We have many strategic options.”
