Herbert Diess, chairman of the Volkswagen group, confirmed on Monday that the carmaker’s Audi and Porsche brands have decided to join Formula 1.
Herbert Diess added that Porsche is already taking more concrete steps to participate in the championship. The leader gave no further details.
It has long been known that the arrival of Audi and Porsche in Formula 1 is directly related to the new regulations for engines, which should come into effect in 2026. It is no secret that the engineers of the companies took part in discussing the details of the regulations. Apparently they were satisfied with the parameters of the new power stations, which is why Diess made a statement.
It has been known for some time that Porsche is in talks with Red Bull Racing – the German manufacturer wants to become a supplier of power plants. As for Audi, three teams are named in the company’s list of potential partners: McLaren, Sauber and Aston Martin.
In addition, it is possible that Audi will not be limited to the role of supplier of power plants, but will participate in Formula 1 with a factory team, after agreeing to purchase or working closely with one of the three mentioned above.
