The story of Oskar Piastri’s transition from Alpine to McLaren is overgrown with new details.
French team boss Otmar Szafnauer said Alpine had invested millions of euros in Oscar’s career and therefore reserved the right to claim damages. At Zandvoort, however, rider manager Mark Webber said that Safnauer had inflated the numbers and that Alpine’s cost to support Piastri was actually not that high.
Mark Webber: “These numbers are disproportionately high. During the summer holidays, they had the opportunity to talk about many millions, but the reality is not like that.
For victories in the youth series, Oscar received good prize money. Yes, there were investments from Alpine, but more than 80% of the budget came from outside sponsors and Oscar’s family – this money financed his childhood career and participation in the Academy. It’s important to provide that context.”
Mark Webber said negotiations will take place in the coming days with Alpine over the early release of Piastri from the contract, which expires at the end of 2022.
“We are going to negotiate next week,” Webber continues. “Oskar is a real professional, so he will do what it takes. It all depends on Alpine. The team has a contract with him until the end of 2022 and it’s up to them to decide if they want Oscar to finish.”
