In the McLaren team, only Lando Norris earned points in Zandvoort – Daniel Ricciardo had practically no chance of that after starting from a distant 17th position.
Lando Norris (7th): “A difficult race, but I still think it went well. We went all out. I think we were capable of a decent pace, but it was hard to compete with Alpine because they could use more flexible tactics and hold me back.
It wasn’t easy for me, so I’m happy with how we worked. The maximum that could be counted on was sixth place, but in the end we finished one place lower. We lost a few points to Alpine, but at this stage of the season they are able to squeeze more out of the car than we do.
Everything else suits me though. We will continue to attack and try to beat them next time.”
Daniel Riccardo (17th): “It was clear from the start that we would struggle on Sunday – both because we started from a distant position and because of the nature of the track. But the first few laps went well, I think we regained a few places, although it’s hard to make a good impression when you start from the back rows.
To overtake in Zandvoort you need a big speed difference, but when the track in front of me was clear it seemed like the car was letting me go more or less fast, but these periods didn’t last long. All in all, it was another tough weekend. Now we are going to prepare for Monza and I will try to bring back the magic from last year.
Andreas Seidli, Team Principal: “Lando had a strong race and finished 7th. In the end he had some bad luck when the safety car pulled away and had to go back to the pits to defend himself against opponents who behaved the same way. As a result, we lost ground to Fernando Alonso, who had fresher tires so he could get to the finish.
Speaking of Daniel, when he started from 17th position, his task was initially difficult because it is difficult to overtake on this track and he had no real chance of moving forward.
This weekend the team has been working really hard – and the race team on track, and the specialists at the base in Woking, and our fellow mechanics Mercedes High Performance Powertrains. It wasn’t easy for our strategists to make the right decisions, but they managed to do it anyway, and the mechanics during the pit stops acted in a coordinated manner and executed them.
In this series of three races in a row, two Grand Prix have already been completed and in just five days we will go back to work in Monza.”
