For many years it was believed that the Renault power plant was inferior to competitors in power. Bruno Famin, who headed the Formula 1 team’s engine division, does not directly confirm this fact, but assures that when developing the 2022 car, the engineers sacrificed power to make the Alpine A522 more balanced.
Bruno Famin: “To be honest, we are not concerned with the exact performance of the power plant. For us, the characteristics of the machine as a whole are important. While developing the bike, we made certain decisions to make the Alpine A522 better. We could have made the engine more powerful, but that would have made the car slower.
Instead, we developed the A522 in conjunction with the power plant to make the car as efficient as possible. The team will continue to adhere to this principle in its work. The fact that we entered the fray again in 2022 proves the correctness of our concept.
I believe the team is on the right track and the caretakers will not disappoint Otmar Safnauer. We know we have found a way to win and strive for success.”
Famin added that a large scale modernization is currently underway at the babysitter base in Viri: “The team continues to invest in production. We already have a new building where power plants are assembled.
Now there is a reconstruction of the first floor on the historical base. We are investing in new facilities, new dynamic stands and new tools needed to develop the next generation of power plants.”
