Horner: Last pit stop was the right decision

After winning the home Grand Prix of the Netherlands, Max Verstappen’s lead in the individual classification over the closest pursuers, Charles Leclerc and Sergio Perez, has grown to 109 points. Max’s Red Bull Racing teammate Sergio Perez finished fifth.

Max Verstappen (1st): “Today’s race turned out to be difficult and eventful – we made the right decisions and we succeeded. We didn’t expect the Mercedes to be very fast on the hard tyres, which made it more difficult for us because we were less competitive on the hardest compound.

Nevertheless, the team did a great job and made the right strategic decisions – great work on the track and at the grassroots.

It’s always nice to win on the home track, but this year I had to put in the effort. It’s great to win again for my fans – I’ve had incredible support and I’m proud to be a Dutchman.”

Sergio Perez (5th): “Great day for the team, but not the best for me. On the first and second stretch I had problems with the rubber decomposition. Because of this, the balance of the car did not match my preferences.

Feverish race with pit lane incidents. I was lucky that the front wing was not damaged when I hit the key. Despite the difficulties, I managed to earn good points.

We have a lot to take from today’s race, but we have a lot to process to come back stronger at Monza.”

Christian Horner, Team Principal: “Incredible race under heavy pressure! The race turned out to be strategically difficult – first we had a virtual safety car and then a real one.

Max drove twelve laps into the pits and let both Mercedes drivers lead. We had to make a serious decision, but it turned out to be the right one – we preferred to restart on more suitable tyres.

The employees you see on the track are only 10% of the team, but behind the scenes you can achieve such results. The team operates at a very high level and the support and efforts at the grassroots allow us to achieve such victories. The team performed fantastically and both drivers worked with maximum efficiency from the moment they arrived on the track.

Sergio was unlucky at the restart – he was overtaken by Carlos Sainz. Now I understand he shouldn’t have stayed on Medium tires but he had a fast pace. We have excellent positions, we are satisfied, but nothing has been decided yet. We have to keep working from race to race and not think too far ahead.

Next week we are waiting for the stage in Monza – we are looking forward to it and we hope to confirm the current form of the team.
